We carefully examine logs from numerous suppliers to identify those which best fit our criteria for- species, size, straightness, health, and condition. To cut great slabs, you must start out with great logs.
NOTE- no healthy tree will ever be cut down to make slabs for us. All logs are sourced from trees that: came down via storm damage, were removed by certified arborists for legitimate reasons, or were removed for construction. We are very cognizant of our role to be good stewards of our natural resources.
All logs up to 36" are cut into slabs with our Woodmizer LT40. (Larger slabs are custom cut).
We cut all slabs to 2.5-3.5 inch thickness, depending on the overall size of the slab. The larger the slab- the thicker we cut it.
This extra thickness not only adds more strength to the slab, but also gives you more material to work with with during your flattening/finishing steps.
Logs are cut so as to maximize the natural grain and features in each log to make the most attractive slabs.
All slabs are kiln dried to get the moisture content down to the desired amount (usually around 8% for interior furniture).
It is imperative that your slab be dried properly before you create your masterpiece- otherwise, your gorgeous slab table will look like a skateboard ramp in a few years.
Many folks say that actually selecting the slab for their project is the hardest part- There are so many different variables- Do you want Walnut, Oak, Pecan, or ?
Do you want live edge or finished edge?
Do you want a River feature with epoxy?
Do you want to highlight the slab's inclusions with epoxy?
Do you want to do a specific size or free flow table?
You are only limited by you imagination.
The good news- we can help with all of them.
Once you have your slab picked and back at your work location- it is time to get it ready to be a table.
You begin by prepping your slab depending upon your project parameters. Live edge?- remove all bark and prep the edges. River Table- cut and place all pieces into the mold in preparation of the epoxy pour. etc.
Rough finishing of the slab can either be done in a large planer or CNC machine, Final finishing will be done by hand.
Once the slab is finished to your satisfaction- apply the finish coatings.
Once your slab is complete, with all finishing done, it it time to complete the project.
Now you fit and attach the braces, legs, and any other structural or cosmetic items you intend to include in your project.
And then- SHOW OFF your new project to make all of your friends' envious of your skill.
Or, in the spirit of maintaining your friendships- send them to us. Then, they (with your supervision) can be the hero in their home
